### Pre-Wedding Rituals

### Wedding Day Rituals
#### 1. **Nikah**
The Nikah is the Islamic marriage ceremony, and it is the core of the wedding. A Maulvi (Islamic priest) conducts the ceremony. The groom proposes to the bride in the presence of witnesses (usually family members), and the bride consents to the marriage. The marriage contract (Nikahnama) is signed, and a marriage sermon is delivered.
#### 2. **Mahr**
This is a mandatory gift given by the groom to the bride, which can be in the form of money, property, or jewelry. It symbolizes the groom's responsibility toward the bride.
#### 3. **Waleema**
This is the festive reception hosted by the groom’s family after the Nikah. It is a celebration of the newlyweds and includes a lavish meal. This event is characterized by a lot of joyous interactions, and it serves as the official public declaration of the marriage.
#### 4. **Ruksati**
This is the farewell ceremony where the bride leaves her parental home and goes to live with her husband. It is an emotional part of the ceremony filled with blessings and good wishes.
### Post-Wedding Rituals
#### 1. **Walimah**
The Walimah is a grand feast given by the groom’s family. It is meant to honor the bride and is a public announcement of the marriage.
#### 2. **Honey Moon**
Like many other cultures, the couple may go on a honeymoon to spend private time together and celebrate their new life.
### Dress and Decorations
- **Bride’s Attire**: The bride usually wears a heavily embroidered saree or lehenga. The color and style may vary depending on family traditions and personal preferences.
- **Groom’s Attire**: The groom typically wears a sherwani, a type of long coat-like garment, or a western suit.
The wedding venue is typically decorated with flowers, fabrics, and lights, creating a festive and celebratory environment.
### Food
Food is an essential part of a Sri Lankan Muslim wedding, with a variety of traditional Sri Lankan and Muslim dishes served. These might include biryani, curries, and other local delicacies, along with sweets such as wattalapam (a coconut custard pudding).
Each of these elements showcases the rich cultural heritage and religious importance of marriage in the Sri Lankan Muslim community. The ceremonies not only celebrate the coming together of two individuals but also signify the union of two families.
