Materials needed:
- Shiny fabric in a mermaid scale pattern
- Tulle or organza in coordinating color
- Elastic
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Scissors
- Fabric glue
- Velcro or zipper
Instructions:
1. Measure the child's chest, waist, and length from waist to floor to determine the size of the dress.
2. Cut out two rectangles of the shiny fabric, one for the front and one for the back, using the measurements you took in step 1.
3. Cut out a piece of tulle or organza that is the same width as the shiny fabric but longer to create a mermaid tail effect.
4. Sew or glue the tulle or organza to the bottom edge of the back piece of shiny fabric, creating the mermaid tail.
5. Sew the front and back pieces of shiny fabric together at the sides, leaving room for armholes.
6. Cut out two straps from the shiny fabric and attach them to the top of the dress to create shoulder straps.
7. Sew elastic around the top edge of the dress to create a snug fit around the child's chest.
8. Add velcro or a zipper to the back of the dress for easy on and off.
9. Optional: embellish the dress with sequins, beads, or other decorations to make it more mermaid-like.
And there you have it, a beautiful DIY mermaid dress for kids that is sure to make them feel like a magical sea creature!
